MY JOURNEY WITH PHOTOGRAPHY
I have loved photography since I was a a young teenager; I used to spend hours on end photographing plants and insects in macro, marvelling at how close up images changed your perspective and made the simplest plants look like incredible art work! Today I’m not so drawn to macro, but I do still enjoy it from time to time. I studied photography at AS-Level and mostly focused on film, often spending hours upon hours and all my lunch breaks alone in the darkroom (film photography wasn’t as popular back then as it is now!) It felt like a magic place, where images would slowly appear on blank sheets of paper in the developing baths. I loved the process and still dream of having my own darkroom one day! I still really enjoy film photography but now work mostly with digital.
My focus is landscape, documentary and lifestyle but I’m also developing a love of portraiture and beautiful interiors. I work to capture the moment and tell a story with photography; I’d like to convey the feel of places I’m in. Sometimes that can be landscapes, sometimes it’s grasses and plants in the wind, light and shadow or a steaming mug or camping stove (I love a steaming stove!). Occasionally it’s the abstracts that help tell a story and give a sense of a place. I also love to use depth in my images with layers and light.
When it comes to editing, I try and keep my photos realistic and just tweak things to make them feel more like I remember the moment in my head. I very rarely remove things to try and make it look more perfect than it is, and never add things in. I know removing things can make an image look more impactful with less clutter, but it also conveys a different reality.
I hope you enjoy my images and feel transported to the places I captured them!
